JAMAICAN SORREL DRINK RECIPE|JAMAICANS CHRISTMAS DRINK

Wah gwaan QUEENS and KINGS!!!

Today I will be telling you how I prepare my sorrel drink, for Christmas and I am very excited to share because I have a quick little back track story to share with you.

As a child, I grew up on a farm, and any fruits and vegetables you can think of, my mom and dad planted it. So we were always stocked but getting stocked was the problem especially when it comes to sorrel.

Hmmm......... anybody have an idea where I'm heading with this story yet? Leave it in the comments.

So funny enough as a child I hated sorrel, so I dreaded christmas time simply because I knew it's sorrel reaping time.

Sometimes I said to mom and dad, why do I have to go and I don't drink sorrel. That is not fair and that's how I get away SOMETIMES from the reaping process. TROUBLE HAH!

But now as an adult I squeezed my big toe and tried it couple times and now I'm absolutely in love with it.

WHAT IS SORREL?

Sorrel is a common name given to the sepals of a hibiscus plant called Roselle, (or Hibiscus sabdariffa if you want to get technical).

Get you Jamaican style sorrel 100%natural below-

HEALTH BENEFITS OF SORREL

To reduce sudden and ongoing pain and swelling (inflammation)of the nasal passages and respiratory tract.

It is also good for treating bacterial infections along with conventional medicines, and for increasing urine flow (as a diuretic).

Sorrel is also an ingredient in the herbal cancer treatment Essiac.

INGREDIENTS FOR THIS SORREL DRINK

21/2 cups dried sorrel

A root of ginger, grated/chopped

5 pimento berries

11 cups boiling water

2 cups sugar

2 Tbsp. lemon juice

3/4 cup white rum Preferably Jamaican Wray and Nephew

Makes 10 cups

METHOD

1) Place sorrel, ginger and pimento berries in a large pot or mixing bowl.

2) Pour boiling water over the ingredients; stir and place in the fridge overnight to steep. (I personally leave mine for 3days the longer the better for me).

3) Using a large strainer, pour the steeped liquid into another container; use a spoon to squeeze more liquid into the container; use a spoon to squeeze more liquid out of the sorrel.

4) Add sugar, lemon juice and rum to sorrel and stir until sugar has dissolved.

Enjoy over ice.

Tip: To prevent it from fermenting, store sorrel drink in the fridge or cold cellar.

Also if your serving this to kids leave out this rum and enjoy....
